The Mara, as the locals call it is a reserve in Kenya named after the Masai people. Masai Mara National Park is one of the most famous national parks in Kenya, though it is only 1,510 sq. km. The national park is in southwestern Kenya, only 270 km from the capital, Nairobi.

On any Sandfield Travel African safari adventure to Kenya you can have to opportunity to go to this amazing national park, which is home to 570 species of birds and 95 different species of mammals.

The Masai Mara National Park was created in 1948, just over 60 years ago. It got the name Mara, which means spotted in Maa, the Masai language. It started out as a 200 sq. km sanctuary but has expanded to 1,510 sq. km, which is divided into three parts. The three parts are called the Mara Triangle, Musiara, and Sekenani. The whole park is unfenced, which allows for the animals to be free and able to roam wherever they want.

Today the Masai Mata National Park is home to all of the big five and many other species.

There are always amazing views and sights, but many say that the best time to go to the Masai Mara National Park is during July to October, which is when the wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and many other animals migrate.

Over two million animals migrate through the national park every year. You can have the opportunity of watching the incredible migration of the wildebeest by designing your own tailor made safari holiday at sandfieldtravel.com.

The wildebeest run in large groups, sometimes consisting of thousands, across the African terrain and even cross crocodile infested rivers, when migrating. It is said that the most interesting and exciting part of the whole migration is when they cross the Mara River.
